maybe
you can always file a PR if it bothers you :-)

bounce: required steps
bounce
look, if you want "idiot proof", there's windows (though it _requires_ you to be an idiot to use it), or any of many linux distributions (like, oh, ubuntu), or even something like PC-BSD
Helio-
upgrading your kernel, *requiring a reboot*, then upgrading world is the most obvious and glaring, but there are other more subtle causal relationships, UPDATING/UPGRADING is not enough
bounce
IIRC most of that is mentioned in the manual
and, you know, to the techie it makes perfect sense that you need to boot into your shiny new kernel to know whether it'll run right, and that this is wise to do before clobbering base with the upgrade because once you do that roll-back gets lots harder
Helio-
it's not about making it idiot proof, its clearing communicating what was done vs what was not done
bounce
ah, well, I never use the fancy newfangled stuff for that. build it myself or drop a tarball on /, then mergemaster
bigpic
this argument is pretty dumb
Helio-
agreed
bounce
what how now?
SFJulie1
bounce, I shall not talk to any project with a G in it. I always fear it is GNU related
bounce
y u no liek greebsd?
toogley
SFJulie1: what is wrong with GNU?
SFJulie1
(Action) used to be on official troll for openBSD (when I was a linux user, but I hated the FSF day 1 when rms called me a daemon) ^_^
toogley
ah, okay^^
SFJulie1
toogley, the first time I saw FSF they were spitting on linus torvalds
and when I took rms in my car, he asked me why I was doing free software, I answered, it is fun, and I am lazy he said it was evil
xmj
must've been bored
SFJulie1
since fun & lazyness are driving me, I thought we were not compatible
xmj
SFJulie1: i didn't quite catch- what was evil, exactly?
SFJulie1
xmj, for richard Stallman, using free software because it is fun and you are lazy is evil
xmj
oops
SFJulie1
I also have friends with GNU projects and the interview for being a member of the FSF church requires to have a political like interview
plus their software built on ideological reasons tends to be poorly designed at my *very own* opinion
xmj
offtopic though
SFJulie1
xmj, totally
I have switched to BSD since systemd
and since clang is doing it to every BSD distro as CC
CrtxReavr
(Action) rolls his eyes.
SFJulie1
btw what is the problem with the ncurses_w in freeBSD ? https://bugs.python.org/issue7384
(not a troll, I wish to know if it is easy to fix, I am python coder)
xmj
koobs: ^
SFJulie1: you may want to ask again in #freebsd-python
SFJulie1: also, you're looking at a five year old bug.
SFJulie1
oh!
SpeakerToMeat
Learnind freebsd the error way is fun
SFJulie1
well, still isn't fixed
xmj
SFJulie1: are you sure?
SFJulie1
(in py2)
sure I tried yesterday
SpeakerToMeat
Is there any reason why I should update this 9.0 to 10.2 instead of 9.3?
xmj
SFJulie1: check all the "committed" entries in that bug
SpeakerToMeat: many
SpeakerToMeat: check the release notes of 10.0, 10.1, 10.2 :-)
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: should I update 9.0 -> 9.3 -> 10.0 -> 10.2, or 9.0 -> 10.2 ?
xmj: I asked since the end of support date is the same for all of them btw :D
xmj: But I'm guessing 10 is not only more secure, but also moving from 10.2 to the next one will be easier than moving from 9.3
xmj
i'm not so sure, i'd try 9->10.2 directly if that works
SFJulie1
xmj, with python2 try "from curses import unget_wch"
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: Well that's why I did a dump of / and I'm testing this on a VM first :D
xmj
SFJulie1: that tells me nothing ?
SFJulie1
xmj, that I am stupid, I should have tried with py3
SpeakerToMeat
Hmm freebsd doesn't use mkfs?
xmj
self-awareness.. ;-)
SpeakerToMeat: for what?
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: Formating an existing partition to blank before restoring a dump
xmj: ok my /sbin reading powers tells me it's newfs
xmj: I somehow love using the "radioshack" method.
xmj
SpeakerToMeat: are you talking about restore(8) ?
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: So called because when I was 13 my parents left me alone in a mall and I wandered into radioshack, and they had a trs80 turned on. And I learned to do some basic from error messages and help messages
SFJulie1
xmj, tried with python 3 same thing: it says that python3 provided by pkg install does not provide the wide char api, thus is using curses and not curses for wide characters
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: I'll recheck the manual... I somehow tought of dump and restore as specialized "tar like" programs, so I have a / with a fs I want to restore over, and tought restoring directly without a format would mix old files and news
xmj: So restore basically wipes clean what's there?
Let me man up
xmj
SpeakerToMeat: i thought it did, but, then, i've never used it
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: I might check, but I might just newfs first.
xmj
SpeakerToMeat: do whatever you feel like! :-)
SFJulie1
as a result application written with python and curses in py3 are not portable on freebsd
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: Hmm "The target file system should belea made pristine with newfs(8), mounted and the user cd(1)'d into the pristine file system before starting the restoration of the initial level 0 backup."
xmj
SpeakerToMeat: there's your answer!
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: Now I need to find how to get this dump into the machine :P thanks sir
xmj
rsync?
or.. USB key :->
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: Maybe. But I'd need to get a large one and format... no, I'll make a raw .img, partition it in... idk, ext3 or try maybe a freebsd ufs partition (not sure how to do it with parted), mount the image, copy the dump there, then unmount and attach to the vm
xmj
vfat! :->
SpeakerToMeat
yeah for a 9Gb sized dump :P :D
xmj
SpeakerToMeat: can't you just gpart it?
SpeakerToMeat
But it has to be ufs. the mini usb freebsd doesn't have mount_ext
CrtxReavr
Reminds me of the last time I ate at a Brazilian steakhouse.
SFJulie1
SpeakerToMeat, you use the old "unix split" command to slice a big file in smaller file and then join them :)
SpeakerToMeat
xmj: not sure, I think gparted can pick up /dev devices only... maybe with nbd it'll work. But, cli parted can pick files afaik... so I'll use the radioshack method
SFJulie1: I did this to transfer the dump... but once on the rescue vm where do I do this to? maybe create a ramdisk?
I must say guys. I love freebsd so far the times I worked with it... but I never got used to your /dev naming.
so my hdd is ad0 and the pen drive is da0.... I see myself doing terrible mistakes that way
NuTzZz
SpeakerToMeat: But you know why the disks have those names?
SpeakerToMeat
NuTzZz: No, not really
NuTzZz
AD = ATA Disk
SFJulie1
SpeakerToMeat, naming is insane in every OS, all hd are 0 based numbered and partition slices are begining with 1
NuTzZz
now SATA is the evolution of that.
SFJulie1
except windows and the alphabet begining with C:/
NuTzZz
So that's often your disk in a Laptop or Desktop.
lol
SpeakerToMeat
SFJulie1: You're right there
SFJulie1
a:/ if counting floppies
xmj
just use labels
NuTzZz
unless it's kinda removable SFJulie1
SpeakerToMeat
SFJulie1: Not so right on the windows side. Since you can assign any letter to any partition, you can do some insane hop and scotch
xmj
SFJulie1: the alphabet doesn't begin at C:
« prev 1 2 3 4 5 6 next »
